Reverse painting on glass has been an art form since antiquity. It is difficult to precisely date a number of works art much older.

Art History has shown that painting on glass became very fashionable in Italy during the Renaissance. Painting Italian glass during the 14th and 15th centuries have been associated with Venice and the island of Murano. These miniature paintings were mostly later began to be used as alters and reliquaries in churches. Petit Recently, a more traditional approach has begun to develop in which artists copied loved landscapes and portraits and biblical scenes.

In the 17th century, painting on glass had spread Austria and the characteristics of this work has begun to be influenced by a more popular form of art which also leads to the development of small industries family of painters on glass.
